Soul Devices Explained
Soul Devices are personalized spiritual weapons wielded by Hirasaka Academy students and instructors with awakened powers. Rei Kamiya dual-wields uchigatana and wakizashi types; other cast members use spears, floating magical tools, jitte variants, and more exotic forms. Your Soul Device defines available Standard attacks, Strong attacks, Spirit Bullet behavior, and unlockable mobility extensions.
Devices enhance through a point-spending tree fed by Wisdom, Virtue, and Valor earned in academy classes. Nodes unlock new combat actions — aerial dodges, dodge attacks, double jumps, wall kicks, knockback recovery — alongside stat boosts and passive traits. Enhancement is character-specific; Rei's investments do not transfer to Fuka or Kazuki.
Attribute Requirements
Trees gate advanced nodes behind minimum Wisdom, Virtue, or Valor ranks. Hybrid builds struggle early when gates demand balanced stats; specialists blaze through one branch then backfill prerequisites later. Wisdom-heavy paths favor Spirit Bullet upgrades, Special Bullet unlocks, and Shoot Gauge efficiency. Valor paths emphasize melee combo extensions and Guard stability. Virtue paths boost support passives, Aether handling, and team assist triggers.
Class Preparation directly feeds these attributes through Action Card Focus. Align weekly class choices with your intended tree path rather than spreading points evenly without plan. Key Ability Unlocks
Mobility unlocks transform labyrinth exploration. Double jump and wall kick open vertical shortcuts that hide Aether statues and cursed armor chests. Knockback recovery prevents embarrassing deaths on platforming segments during 2D combat knockback. Dodge attack extensions add offensive value to evasive play, synergizing with Issen-focused builds that want aggressive Accel Gauge generation.
Combat unlocks include enhanced Strong attack variants, additional Spirit Bullet types (homing fire, wind bomb, ice laser), and Soul Accel duration modifiers. Some nodes add party-wide buffs when activated during 3D arena transitions — valuable for players who frequently swap characters mid-fight.
Resource Planning
Enhancement materials from Xanadu exploration supplement attribute points for high-tier nodes. Facility Requests from the Training Ground and Research Building supply these materials reliably. Avoid spending rare materials on low-tier reversible nodes; the enhancement menu highlights which investments are permanent respec exceptions versus refundable previews.
Respec options appear at defined story milestones and through late-game items. Early choices matter but are not permanently punishing — experiment on first playthrough, then optimize on New Game Plus when class schedules and Support Cards are fully unlocked.
Character-Specific Recommendations
Rei benefits from balanced Valor and Wisdom for dual-blade melee-ranged hybrid play. Ranged specialists prioritize Wisdom first to accelerate Special Bullet access. Defensive characters investing in Guard and parry nodes want Valor and Virtue support.
